Chapter 1: What is a Diesel Heater?

Bunk Heater

Diesel Heater

A diesel parking heater is an after-market gadget that you can put to function from within the house. It works by a remote controller or an app installed on your smartphone.
The diesel heater can also be turned on and off through the control panel.
This remote lets you start your vehicle and warm it up. It doesn’t matter if you are still awake or not. The remote can work even when you prepare your first coffee cup.

As the name suggests, this type of heater uses diesel as the primary fuel source.
For this reason, it is the best fit for diesel-operated vehicles. The optimization with diesel fuel is easy. It incorporates into the existing fuel system.

The design of the diesel heater system is handy. You can use either water or air to send the heat heater release. Otherwise, the heat sends out to various parts of your vehicle or marine vessel.

The design of the diesel heater also gives off an extra capability. It provides instant heat to the interior of your truck, cars, van, yacht, sailboat, powerboats, and motor-home.

Chapter 2: Purpose of the Diesel Heater

Heating and maintaining the following warmth:

  • Crew and passenger compartments
  • Freight compartments
  • Ship’s cabins, driver cabs, and working cabs
  • Recreational vans
  • Pre-heating or de-misting windows

Based on its functional purpose, try not to use the diesel parking heater for the given applications:

  • Drying or heating.
  • Living organisms (animals or people) by blowing hot air straight at the subject.
  • Directing hot air into containers
  • Objects
  • Long-term non-stop use. For example, pre-heating and heating of:
    • Houseboats

Chapter 3: Benefits of Diesel Heater

Now, why do you need to install the heating system into your vehicle or marine vessel? Why is it necessary?

I often get this question.

So, let’s take a look at some of the benefits of the diesel heater. This way, you will understand why you need to spend your hard-earned money on it.

Here are the five major benefits of a diesel parking heater to your car, RV, or boat.

Safety

Statistics say that most of the accidents occur in winter. Also, it occurs within the first 15 minutes of our travel.

The reason behind this is a lack of vision. The late reaction speed because of cold temperature is also a reason.

A diesel heater comes in necessary to reduce the danger of frosted windows. Also, it offers greater comfort and safety during cold and wet days.

The diesel engine heater also puts both the climate and your vehicle’s engine under less strain.

Superior Heating Performance

A diesel heater gives off excellent heating work. If you intend to drive in cold weather, then it is your best option.

With a small amount of power and fuel consumption, the heating system works as a very cheap solution.

Sample heating process

Some fuel types do not burn well with given conditions. They generate wet heat. This heat leaves you with futile moisture and contraction.

But, a diesel heater is not like that. Instead, it will give you clean, dry heat compared to other heating alternatives.

Temperature Control and Enjoyable Drive

A diesel heater provides temperature control. That way, it provides more than warmth during winter.

The heater sucks the external air in summer. The parked vehicle stores it. It cools off the vehicle’s interior. So, you can relax and have comfort in it.

Hydronic Heater

Diesel Engine Heater

The ventilation ability slows the forming of immoderate heat. It also stops the unusual high interior temperatures.

Cost Saving

Operating the diesel heater to pre-warm your car or campervan is more effective. It also serves the benefits and productivity of the heater.

You can lower the fuel + Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) costs. It can happen by avoiding the idle state of the vehicle when warming up.

The motor vehicle uses the most incredible quantity of DEF at idle.

Gauge

Gauge

The diesel heater needs a tiny quantity of fuel to function. It is much less than idling your vehicle’s engine. Also, it frees you to attend to other critical matters.

Instead of starting your car, observe and wait for it to warm up. After that, you can decide to do some other task.

In the meantime, your diesel parking heater performs its role of pre-heating. It heats the engine windscreen and cab to help you save time and money.

Low Environmental Pollution

Your vehicle will generate more exhaust gas when idling than a diesel heater.

In a preliminary study, we get to know that using a diesel parking heater system is helpful. It decreases environmental pollution. It is also good for passenger compartments of your vehicle.

In a nutshell, purchasing top-quality and reliable diesel heaters is awesome. In addition, the multifaceted control systems with onboard diagnostic functions offer you peace of mind.

Chapter 4: Main Components of Diesel Heater

Let’s look at the key components of a diesel heater. After that, we will go through the functions.

The controlling unit

The location of the control unit is at the front of the diesel heater. And the back end of the heat supply fan wheel.

The unit comprises many things. There is a single microprocessor, signal acquisition electrical circuit. There is also the electrical driving circuit, the voltage, the rotational speed. Not to mention there is a temperature monitoring electrical circuit too.

The control unit plays the role of ensuring automatic fault processing. It also controls the automatic heating process and system monitoring.

Control unit

Control unit

The control of the working process

When the diesel heater works, the control unit regulates the fuel pump’s frequency. Also, It controls the rotational speed of the fan. The steering of the electric plug is also working under the control unit.

The control unit responds to the signal of the motor’s rotational speed. And, the surface temperature also plays a vital role here. So, the repetition of the fuel pump works well. The expected value and actual value of the environment temperature remain the same.

Malfunction management

The control unit of the diesel heater will switch off sometimes. It happens when the heater fails to turn on. Usually, there is an abnormal fire happening here.

Also, a short circuit/open circuit occurs on the motor, the electric plug, the sensor, or the fuel pump.

The switch is instrumental in the protection of the diesel heater.

It stops the glow pin. Then, it stops the rotation of the motor.

The signal light of the controlling switch will identify all these.

Fault display

If there is a problem with the diesel heater, the signal light (the green light) will point it out. This way, it assists you in repairing the diesel heater.

The interval of the sign will mean different fault codes.

For more details, check the troubleshooting section of this guideline.

Sensor equipment

All diesel heaters feature a range of sensors. It is for an efficient and reliable working process.

For instance, most diesel heaters may have the following sensors.

Carbon monoxide sensor (This is an external device)

Some diesel heaters do not consider safety performance due to design flaws. When in use, it is recommended to install a carbon monoxide sensor.

The sensor helps track the concentration of carbon monoxide gas. And the sensor comes with a controller.

So, it works when the amount of carbon monoxide is high.

Overheat Sensor

The heater can detect hot air. So, the sensors also track the heating air/water temperature.

Overheat Sensor

Overheat Sensor

The controller can alter the operation mode of the combustion chamber. Also, it can regulate the heat output based on the set figure.

Power Supply

Most diesel use either a 12V or 24V storage battery, Some portable diesel heaters can use 110V or 230V AC power.

Power supply

Power supply

If the power supply voltage is higher or lower than the set limit. Then, the diesel parking heater will switch into the locking mode.

The screen will display the fault code.

And these voltages are not compatible.

Perhaps, the inverter can be used to adjust the voltage, but when choosing an inverter, please consider the output current intensity of the inverter.

Fuel Supply

The diesel heater can have its fuel supplied from the vehicle’s fuel tank. Or, it can take it from an independent fuel tank.

You can modulate the transmission and dosage of the fuel supply.

Heating unit

The heating unit is the core of the heater. Diesel and air are mixed and burned in the heating unit, and the heat generated heats the air or coolant.

Hosing

The component helps in conducting the diesel from the tank via a pump to the heating unit.

Fuel Pump

The heater unit and the diesel tank stay together. The pump helps to deliver the correct quantity of fuel.

The fuel pump generates noise and resonance at a fixed frequency.

Noise is relatively easy to solve, while resonance requires a fuel pump bracket made of special materials to isolate it.

Chapter 5: Working Principles of a Diesel Heater

You can save a lot of money by using a vehicle running on diesel. The reason is, it is very cheap in fuel consumption.

Still, this helpful feature can also come with a few drawbacks.

Because diesel engines are energy efficient, they generate very little waste heat. As a result, you can use them to warm up the interior of your car during winter days.

To pay for this, install a diesel parking heater. It will give out adequate heat to warm up your vehicle’s interior.

The diesel heater system comes in several varieties. You can select one based on the make and model of your vehicle.

Yet, despite the types, the working principle of a diesel parking heater remains the same.

How Diesel Air Heater Works

With a diesel air heater, an intake pipe draws in the air. Then the internal combustion process of the heater from the environment.

The air then moves to the combustion chamber of the diesel heater. It mixes up with the diesel and lights the heat on the heat exchanger.

An internal blower then sucks in cold air from the cabin to the heat exchanger, which heats it.

The diesel heater’s fan blows the warm air back into the cabin.

The exhaust pipe emits out the combustion exhaust gas.

The diesel air heating system is the most popular diesel parking heater in this field because it is a cost-saving design.

This type of heating system has low power consumption and is very easy to install.

Chapter 6: How Diesel Water Heater Works

A combustion air fan pumps air into the combustion chamber of the diesel water heater system. After that, some of the air goes to a secondary chamber.

A glow pin pre-heats the chamber. And, the pumping of fuel occurs once the chamber reaches the set condition.

The glow pin ignites the fuel-air mixture. Then, the resultant flame moves to the combustion chamber.

The glow pin switches off after the flame stabilizes. It also generates heat that goes to the coolant in the heat exchanger.

Vvkb Diesel Engine Heater

Diesel Engine heater

An electric circulation pump tracks the circulation of the coolant when the heater is on.

The warm coolant goes to the ventilation system of the motor vehicle. So it lets the warm coolant into the cabin. Then, the passenger compartment also warms up with it.

Sometimes, the control unit changes to the part-load operation mode. For example, it happens when the coolant heat reaches 70°C to save energy.

The diesel water heater is better because it warms up the vehicle engine. So, it provides a boost in starting performance.

Modern diesel water parking heaters keep the vehicle warm. It also helps the engine’s cooling circuit.

A preheated engine needs less fuel to start. The reason is there is no warm-up or cold starting on it.

Warm start-up minimizes the emission of poison by approximately 60%. That is why you should install this heater in your car.

The steady flame lets the diesel water heater produce a perfect flame. Also, it starts with very low exhaust fumes.

Usually, you install the diesel water parking heater inside the engine. It feels better to keep it there.

The process is valuable. The heating system gives a perfect vehicle’s water circuit system.

Chapter 7: How to Install Diesel Heater

An independent heater system is a perfect addition to your vehicle. When you install this heater, it generates a lot of heat. Almost every engine manufacturer knows this as the best.

Diesel heaters reduce the use of fuel and idling time. It is unlike any other heating device.

This heater has many advantages. So do you consider installing a diesel air heater or diesel water heater in your vehicle? It is no surprise to me if you are.

For the correct procedure of installing the diesel heater, continue reading the article.

You can always fix a diesel heater by yourself, anytime you wish. So don’t worry if you do not have any gadget in your vehicle’s system.

Undertaking a DIY can make the job a lot cheaper than engaging a professional to perform the task.

You only need to ensure that you have the right tools and hardware to make the task easy and fast.

Before you start, we recommend that you spare some time to organize the installation.

The place and method matter. So, where and how you mount your heating system depends. It comprises both your vehicle’s design and plan. So, it depends on your diesel heater’s technical settings.

For that reason, this guide gives helpful insight into different sections. You can find these handy once the situation arrives.

So, go through every section carefully before beginning the installation.

As a general rule, before you begin, know the location of your vehicle’s water fuel tanks. The batteries or any other accessory may hinder the routing of the hot air. It may also influence the installation.

Before installing the diesel heater into the vehicle or boat, make sure you are doing it correctly. Maintain any legal documents on the use too. The construction of the vehicle also matters.

Installation Positions

The diesel heater setup should be in a dry and secure location. In addition, it should be within the acceptable mounting planes.

Before settling on the position:

  1. Take note that the length of the exhaust.
  2. Take a note of the location.
  3. Note down the exhaust hull fitting may affect where you place the heater unit.

Also, it would help if you locate where the diesel heater is. This way, you can understand where the drawing of air or water will be. You will also get to know the demerits.

Diesel Heater

Diesel Heater

In principle, you should install the diesel parking heater with the fuel. Also, the combustion air and exhaust connection should face downward.

If you fail to ensure this angle, it will impact the engine. This could affect the best operation of the diesel heater. The impact will happen when you are about to drive down the angle.

The heater will work at a permanent 15° angle to an angle of 30°.

When you decide on the position, you should also think about the removal. This way, the future servicing of the diesel heater stays stable.

Installation position in a camper van

In a camper van, you need to install the diesel parking heater in the luggage compartment.

The inner compartment But good. Yet, it is okay if you cannot install the heater system in the boot or passenger compartment.

You can mount the diesel heater beneath the vehicle’s floor. Ensure to protect it against splashing water.

The guide and suggestions that I put down here are examples. This is the way you can install it.

You can try other installation locations too. They can be so long as they conform to the requirements. You can only install it in the mentioned places in this guide.

Installing mounting plate

To make it easy, most manufacturers include a mounting template. It comes with a diesel heater kit that helps you set it up.

The template shows all the locations you need. It also mentions the clearances you can use.

You can check for approval around sub-floor parts. You will find the heat-sensitive parts in the guide. These are the places you need to point out before set-up.

Always look out for the obstructions beneath your vehicle. That way, you won’t block or hit any obstacle while you drill.

If necessary, remove the obstacles.

Applying a hole-saw or similar large-hole cutter will help you outline. So, make a hole in the middle of the template outline. After that, use a drill bit to bore mounting holes.

Temporarily put in and position the diesel heater. Mount the plates. Also, mount the slot four locator bolts via the plate.

Use the mounting plate of the heater as the template. Then, cut the flooring material.

Remove the flooring material and the mounting plate.

Mounting plate

Mounting plate

Mount gasket on the diesel parking heater, then fix the mounting plate on the heater and put on foam seal.

You can as well install the exhaust tube on the diesel heater at this stage.

Refer to the section on a mounting exhaust system.

Install the fuel line coupler. Then, take an air intake tube. Do it before attaching the diesel heater to its mounting position.

Install the heater/plate by putting then in the chosen to mount position. Use the mounting bolts and locknuts while doing it.

Thin mounting surfaces need extra support. They need it to offer the diesel heater system a secure mount.

You should exercise extreme care. So, you do not secure the system on the cabin bulkheads. This is where vibration or noise transmission is possible.

You should not store any fuel containers near it. Try not to store aerosol cans or other combustible/flammable materials as well. Also, keep them away from the location of the heater.

Do not locate the diesel heater in a spot where any damage could happen to it.

Cable harness connection

If you need, you can change the cable harness link to the other side of the heater.

To do that, remove the controller. After that, lower the semi-circular cable to the harness casing unclipped.

Installing Heater Air System and the Exhaust System

The combustion air parts in the diesel heater kit often comprise stuff. It is a flexible kindle of air hose and a silencer.

If you need, you can shorten or lengthen the flexible combustion air hose. You can do it based on the setup conditions.

Fit the heater air system in such a way so that it draws in the air needed. So, it is for combustion from the fresh air outside the vehicle.

Make sure the exhaust system discharges the exhaust fumes. These fumes are in the kindle of the environment.

Put measures to avoid the re-entry of the exhaust fumes into the vehicle. This way, it results in health problems and suffocation.

Air inlet, fuel inlet, and exhaust

Air inlet, fuel inlet, and exhaust

The tubes go via the exterior wall or holes under the vehicle. Therefore, you need to put in place measures to inhibit splash water entry.

You must protect the tubes, and they should be able to resist shock. After that, ensure to use only the exhaust tube and air inlet tube supplied with the diesel heater.

Commonly, the exhaust pipe is a corrugated stainless steel pipe/tube. There, the air inlet pipe is a corrugated tube made of aluminum.

It has a paper and plastic coat on its surface.

Make sure that you can identify them. It is necessary to avoid making mistakes.

To join the tubes with the diesel heater, kindly use the supplied clamps. Fasten them on the air inlet and the exhaust pipe vent.

You should maintain the protective hood found on the vents of the exhaust tube. Also, maintain the air inlet tube in a fit state.

Be careful not to damage or remove them.

Both the exhaust tube and air inlet tube need to come outwards and downwards from the heater. Otherwise, you will have to prepare a Ø4mm hole at the bottom of the tube for emitting condensation water.

In case the tube requires curves, the radius cannot be less than 50mm.

The tube opening should stay fixed so that they are not reversed toward the moving vehicle.

Different types of pipes

Different types of pipes

Ensure that the tube’s opening is free from slurry, snow, rain, or any other kind of dirt.

Ensure you install the exhaust tube away from plastic components. It is also necessary to check If other substances are nearby. It is only for the vehicle body having poor thermal resistance.

Be keen to fix the exhaust tube properly. Fix them with the exhaust vent facing downwards at a right angle to the road’s surface with a 90°±10 angle.

If you want to ensure such an angle of the tube, you need to place it far. For example, just the exhaust tube fixing clip needs to be within 150mm from the end of the tube.

Warning

The air intake openings of the diesel heater should be in such a friendly manner. Make sure it is not possible to suck the gases from the heater to the vehicle heating system.

Also, it should not allow for contamination. They are of the heating air with stuff like – salt spray, dust, among other contaminants.

For circulating air, place the circulating air intake. By this, the engine cannot suck the outflowing hot air again.

In case of probable overheating, the surface heats up to a most of 90 °Celsius. The local air can meet a temperature of up to most of 150 °Celsius.

Of course, this is immediately before the defect shutdown.

So, you must use only certified temperature-resistant hot air hoses. They are diesel heater makers. It helps air and exhaust systems.

Check the operation of the diesel heater. The mean outflow temperature is recorded after it works for about 10 minutes. Keep it at about 30 cm from the air outlet. It does not need to be over 110 °C (with the intake temperature being approximately 20 °C).

You should fit a contact protection device if there is a danger to the passengers. The driver usually comes into contact with the heater when you are driving the vehicle.

Exhaust safety instructions

Let the exhaust tube stay isolated. The entire exhaust system heats up right after you turn the heater on.

Preparing installation of exhaust

Preparing installation of exhaust

You need to observe the guide fully. It is for security purposes. Try to follow every tip while installing it.

  • The exhaust outlet should end in the open air.
  • The exhaust pipe should not stand out above the vehicle’s lateral limits.
  • Install the exhaust tube sloping downwards. If need be, bore a drain hole about Ø 5 mm at the end of the tube to drain off condensation.
  • You should not damage critical functional components of the vehicle. Try to keep proper consent.
  • Install the exhaust pipe well. Keep it away from heat-sensitive components. Focus on the electrical cables and fuel the pipes (metal or plastic). Then, brake hoses, and other parts.
  • You should fasten the exhaust pipes. The recommended clearance is 50 cm. This way you can prevent destruction from vibration.
  • Route the exhaust system. So that, there is no possibility of sucking in the released exhaust fumes with the combustion air.
  • Snow, slurry, and dirt must not clog the mouth of the exhaust pipe.
  • The exhaust pipe mouth should not be in the vehicle’s direction of travel.
  • Always fit the exhaust silencer to the motor vehicle.

Heater air system safety instructions

  • The combustion air opening should stay free at all times. Free as in free of obstacles.
  • Put the combustion air intake. That way it is not practical to draw in the exhaust gases with the combustion air.
  • The combustion air intake should not point in the direction. Make sure it is not against the wind flow area.
  • The combustion air intake should be clear of snow and dirt.
  • Fix the combustion air intake system slanting moderately downwards. If you need, bore a drain hole about Ø 5 mm. Do it at the end of the pipe to drain off condensation.

Warning

Every kind of combustion generates toxic exhaust gases. It also lets out high heat.

So, you need to observe the following guidelines when installing.

  • Do not carry out any task on the exhaust system when the diesel heater is running.
  • Before you do any work on the exhaust system, turn the diesel heater off. Then wait for all the components to cool down.
  • Do not breathe in the exhaust fumes.
  • Wear safety gloves when you handle the exhaust system.

Installing the Fuel System

The fuel system is a part of a diesel heater. The fuel system comprises many things.

They are fuel standpipe, shut-off valve, fuel line, fuel-metering pump, and connectors.

Fix fuel pipe

Fix fuel pipe

Installing the standpipe

The fuel tank openings (or tank cover) for set-up must be of the proper size. In addition, they should come with a clipped brim and perfect evenness about the opening.

You will need a good plug for the bottom of the standpipe.

The base of the standpipe needs to be 30mm-40mm from the fuel tank bottom. It is to draw enough fuel. It also prevents the drawing in of impurities sediments found at the bottom of the fuel tank.

The diagram below shows a typical setup using a fuel standpipe. Fuel standpipe is the favorite technique for fuel to take off.

The standpipe reduces any issues by air leaks. It also solves problems of lack of fuel and overpressure. This problem arise because they stay connected to an engine’s fuel line.

Positioning the fuel-metering pump

When you install the fuel-metering pump, an issue may arise. It is some sort of sound. You will notice it once it operates.

So, mount it on a surface or an area that will not send the sound into the vehicle.

The selected location also needs to be free of moisture.

Firstly, mount the fuel-metering pump with the electrical link. Then, let the pressure side rises. It will rise upwards at allowable angles. Look at the illustration in the diagram below.

Recommended tilt angle of fuel pump

Recommended tilt angle of fuel pump
  1. Installation positions between 0° and 15° not allowed.
  2. The preferred installation position is between 15° to 35°.
  3. Installation position between 35° to 90° allowed.

When using a fuel hose to join the fuel pipes, always install the fuel pipes in a butt joint to inhibit any bubbles.

Suitable connection
Suitable connection
  1. Correct connection.
  2. Incorrect connection – bubble formation.

Take the fuel to the engine from the fuel pipe. Then, you should disconnect the fuel pipe coming from the fuel tank to the fuel filters.

Re-connect it with pipes that are thicker than the reducing T.

The thinner pipe of the reducing needs to join the fuel pump. This pipe is of the diesel heater through tube and fuel tube fitting.

You should ensure that the angle of installation is by the diagram below. Or, regular operation of the diesel parking heater may get affected.

After installation, you will need to start and then turn off the vehicle’s engine. Do it after one minute of work to eject air confined in the standpipe.

Safety instructions

You need to obey the safety guidelines. Do it while installing the fuel-metering pump. Also, keep a look at the guide while routing the fuel pipes and installing the fuel tank.

Make sure you go by these instructions. You have to observe, or else it may lead to malfunctions.

Risk of fire, explosion, poisoning, and injuries

  • Take extra caution while handling fuel.
  • Turn off the diesel heater and engine of the vehicle before refueling.
  • Turn it off before beginning work on the fuel supply system.
  • Avoid naked lights when dealing with fuel.
  • Do not smoke.
  • Do not breathe in fuel vapors.
  • Avoid any fuel contact with your skin.

Safety instructions for routing the fuel pipes

Routing pipes into the installation unit
Routing pipes into the installation unit
  • Cut off pipes and hoses using only a sharp knife. You should not crush the interfaces and keep them free of burrs.
  • You should route the fuel pipe from the fuel-metering pump to the diesel heater at a continuous rise.
  • You need to fasten the fuel pipes. That way, it can prevent any destruction. It also helps the production of noise due to vibrations (suggested clearance of about 50 cm).
  • Make sure you protect fuel pipes from any mechanical damage.
  • Routing of the fuel pipes should relate to engine flow. The misuse of the vehicle does not impact the service life of the heater.
  • Protect all parts that carry fuel. You must try to keep it away from interfering heat.
  • Do not tighten or route the fuel pipes to the exhaust system. Be it a vehicle or heater, do not do it. At crossings, ensure enough clearance if needed on hose or heat deflection plates.
  • Do not permit evaporation. Also, no dripping fuel to ignite on electric systems. Make sure no fuel collect on hot components.
  • When joining fuel pipes with a fuel hose, install the fuel pipes in a butt joint. It inhibits the formation of any bubbles.

Safety instructions for fuel tanks and fuel pipes in coaches and buses

Installing fuel pump
Installing fuel pump
  • Do not route the fuel tanks and fuel pipes via the driver’s cab. Also, avoid it in the passenger cell in buses and coaches.
  • You must position the fuel tanks in coaches and buses. That way, you do not expose the exits to direct hazards from a fire.

For noise reasons, do not fit the fuel pipes onto structural sound transmitting parts.

You can push a sponge rubber hose over the fuel tubes to reduce noise.

You can also use the Vvkb silent fuel pump, which is a specially designed fuel pump whose working noise is significantly lower than that of ordinary fuel pumps. Moreover, the vibration is very small.

  • You should not apply overpressure in the fuel tank or gravity to convey the fuel.
  • You should not withdraw fuel after the fuel pump of the vehicle.
  • Separate the tank connection or use a pressure reducer. Do it when the fuel pipe pressure is better than 0.2 bar to a maximum of 4, 0 bar.
  • You must use a separate tank connection if the fuel pipe pressure exceeds 4, 0 bar or a non-return valve. They are within the return pipe (located in the tank).
  • Always use support sleeves in the plastic when using a T-piece in a plastic pipe. Join the plastic pipe and the T-piece with the fuel hoses and fasten with hose clips.

Safety instructions for installing the fuel-metering pump

  • Ensure you install the dosing pipe having the pressure side tilting upwards – a minor incline of 15°.
  • Ensure to guard the fuel-metering pump and filter against extreme heat. Do not install close to exhaust pipes and silencers.

Fuel supply safety information

  • You should not operate the diesel heater using unauthorized fuel/fuel blends. Avoid using any used oil too.
  • If you fail to follow these, it can cause personal injuries. They also damage or fault the diesel parking heater.
  • You should only use a fuel allowed by the manufacturer of the vehicle or diesel heater.

Installing Electrical System

At first, Remove the top case from the diesel heater. After that, connect the curb to the box socket.

Electrical connections
Electrical connections

Check your wiring to confirm. Ensures if you do it like the wiring diagrams in the heater kit.

These connections are crucial. Not being able to wire them well may give a poor result.

Mounting Rheostat Control Dial (Standard)

Before you drill holes, observe the behind the panel. Look out for any sort of blockages.

Mount rheostat the control and fix wiring use.

Use cable ties to fasten the wiring harness.

You should make sure that the optical fiber is in contact with the rotary knob.

The control panel of some heaters has a temperature sensor. In order to prevent the thermostat from controlling the heater’s work prematurely, please do not let the air outlet directly face the control panel.

Optional Timer Installation

You can install the optional timer in the place of the rheostat switch. This switch is where the heater control is. It usually comes standard with the diesel heater.

Before you drill, again check behind panels. Clear out any obstructions.

Use cable ties to secure the wiring harness. Then, channel the timer harness between the outer and inner body panels. Do it to the location of the timer.

Make sure the timer mounting plate acts as a template. Then bore two holes in the inner body panel and mount the timer.

Power and Ground Connections

There are route timers and diesel heater ground. There are also power wires via the vehicle’s body grommet.

You need to fix the ground to mounting the bolt. You also need to fix the power wires to the mounting bolt of the diesel parking heater with a p-clamp.

Use the cable ties. Then, fasten the excess fuel pump harness. So that, the power circuit holder between the vehicle batteries.

Controller power connection
Controller power connection

You need to attach the timer to the vehicle’s battery. So reach out to the battery and fix it. Then, the diesel heater power wires to the battery’s positive terminal.

After that, attach the timer and diesel heater ground wires. Attach them to the negative side of the battery.

Raise and fasten the vehicle battery tray.

Concluding Work

  1. You have to return all the vehicle panels and components. Also, return the parts you removed during the installation.
  2. Use nylon cable ties to fasten all loose cables and lines.
  3. Spray the electrical connections with a wax coating. Do it for the diesel heater components as well.

Final Inspection

Inspect installation for:

  • Clamp tightness and exhaust system routing.
  • Loose fasteners.
  • Loose fuel line clamps.
  • Clamp tightness and routing of the combustion air intake tube
  • Fuel lines routing and fuel lines stay tied. They stay guarded against chafing and associated damages.
  • Whether there is air or small bubbles inside the oil tubing, small bubbles will affect the normal operation of the heater.
  • Loose battery connections and wiring connections
  • Wiring harness routing and wiring harness stay tied. These routes stay guarded against chafing and associated damage.

Initial Start-up

Initial startup
Initial startup
  1. Set the correct time and date on the heater timer. Do it as per the operating guidelines given.
  2. Turn on the diesel heater system. Do it by using the instant heat button and check:
  • Illumination of Instant heat indicator and timer panel.
  • Starting the start-up sequence.
  • A successful start-up. The diesel heater will generate heat at its outlet.

Start the diesel parking heater more than once. It is to force air out of the fuel system for the heater to start.

Turn on and off the diesel heater several times till it starts and runs well.

If the diesel heater cannot start or work, please refer to the diesel heater installation precautions to make sure that all steps of installing the heater are normal.

Chapter 8:Operation of Diesel Heater

Operation depends on the model and design of the diesel heater. You can use a range of machines to achieve a suitable heating mode.

Let’s have a quick overview of some of the most common mechanisms:

Switching on

When you switch on the diesel heater, the control lamp lights up. This control lamp stays in the control element.

The lamp as well switches the glow plug on, and the fun begins at low speed.

There may exist too much residual heat in the heat exchanger. It happens because of the way you operate it last time. As a result, only the fan starts up (referred to as cold blowing).

After clearance of the residual heat, the heater starts.

Initial startup
Switch with display

The fuel supply starts after about 60 seconds. Then, the fuel-air mixture within the combustion chamber ignites.

Once the flame sensor detects the flame, the glow plug switches off after 80 seconds.

The diesel heater switches to the normal mode.

Operating using the controller

Turn the control knob clockwise. Then plug in the power supply of the controller.

Then, the signal light will show. and the heater will work.

The controller will operate on the target. It will operate by the knob position.

It takes the system 45 seconds to join the controller. Also, it starts with the fuel pump during the start-up stage.

If you want to regulate the power and temperature of the diesel heater as it is working. Then turn the controller to the degree you want.

The mode signal light may change to red. This change happens if the mode switch remains at the releasing state (air conditioning mode).

Use the pattern transfer switch. For example, use it to change to the ventilation mode.

The mode signal light will change to a red, showing the successful transfer. So you will know the transfer occurs.

The signal light will change to green if the mode switch remains at the ventilation mode.

The diesel heater will change to air conditioning mode when you release the mode switch.

The signal light will change to red, showing a successful transition.

Selecting temperature with the control element

Use the knob to choose the needed temperature. Do it in the driver’s cab and the passenger compartment.

The temperature settings range between +10 °C and +30 °C based on the current temperature. Also, consider the size of the space you want to heat.

The required knob setting is an actual value.

Control in the heating mode

The controller of the diesel heater tests the heat. This test occurs in the heating mode.

Sometimes the heat goes beyond average. The set heat on the control element works right there. The diesel parking heater works its output by the heat.

There are four control stages. Firstly, make it practical for you to adjust the outflow of heat generated. Second, it is by the diesel heater to the heating requirements.

The quantity of fuel and fan peed correspond to the control stage.

Suppose the output temperature exceeds the set heat in the lowest stage. In that case, the diesel heater changes to the “OFF” mode. The fan is continuing to run for about 4 minutes to help it cool off.

The fun continues at low speed (circulation mode). It also gets turned off (fresh air mode). It happens until the moment you will turn on the diesel parking heater again.

Ventilating mode

In the ventilating mode, activate the changeover switch first. It refers to heating/venting.

Do it before you switch on the diesel heater.

Switch the display temperature unit of the control panel

The temperature displayed on the control panel of your heater may be in degrees Fahrenheit or degrees Celsius.

However, you need to set the temperature unit of the control panel to a unit you are familiar with.

You need to hold down the “AUTO” key for more than 3 seconds, the temperature display unit will switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit.

Switching off

When you switch off the diesel heater, the control lamp turns off. This is because it switches off the fuel supply.

The fan keeps running for approximately 4 minutes to cool down the system.

As the fan continues to run, the glow plug switches for about 40 seconds to clean.

Turn the control knob anti-clockwise to “0” if there is a need to power off the diesel heater.

The working signal light will go off after about 3 seconds.

Suppose the fuel pump remains in the working mode after turning off the system. Then know that the diesel heater will stop functioning instantly.

The fan will keep running for about 180 seconds and then stop.

Please note:
You cannot cut off the heater power supply directly when the heater is working.
This kind of operation may cause the Heater combustion chamber is too high.
This causes the heater to malfunction.

Special case

If there is no fuel supplied, the heater will stop working. Likewise, if the diesel heater stays in the “OFF” stage till you switch it off, it will stop working too.

Control and safety devices

The start cycle will repeat if the diesel heater fails to ignite. It happens within 90 seconds of starting the fuel pump.

After another 90 seconds trial to pump fuel, the heater will try again. If it fails, it will switch off.

The controller gets locked after several failed start attempts.

The diesel heater restarts if the flame goes out by itself while working.

Suppose the heater fails to ignite within 90 seconds of starting. Or, it ignites and switches off again after 15 minutes. Then the diesel parking heater will power off. In that case, i.e., the fuel supply closes, and the fan keeps running on for about 4 minutes.

You can solve the problem by turning the diesel heater off and on again.

But, do not repeat the procedure more than twice.

The combined sensor (overheating sensor/flame sensor) sets off in case of overheat. It also interrupts the fuel supply. It switches off the diesel heater in the end.

So, fix the cause of the overheating. Then, you can restart it by switching it off and on again.

The diesel heater’s controller may lock after switching off. It is due to excess heat that is beyond average.

Also, the heater system may switch off after about 20 seconds. It happens if it reaches the upper or lower voltage limit.

Sometimes, the interruption leads to the fuel-metering pump. It may also lead to a defect in the glow plug. In such cases, the diesel heater will not start.

If there is an electric lead interruption or defect in the sensor, the diesel heater will not start. Instead, it turns off again in the start phase.

The controller monitors the speed of the fan motor continually.

If there is a deviation in the speed by over 10%, it turns off after 30 seconds. It happens again if the fan motor fails to start up.

When the controller switches off the heater, the glow plug remains on for about 40 seconds. Then the fan runs on to cleanse off any combustion residues.

  • The radio remote control

Key Installation Points

Usually, diesel heater models come with extensive setup guidelines. But, the sizes of the vehicle are not the same. They also vary in the materials used and construction techniques.

Let’s check some of the essential points. These are what you need to consider before completing that buy.

Discuss these issues with the sales staff. Or discuss with the one who owns the expertise and experience to answer.

So, you can buy with confidence and understand your heater. It is crucial because it will function for your vehicle.

  • When installing the heater, you need to make sure that the impeller of the heater motor does not touch the heater shell.
  • The mounting location of the heater. It requires enough space around it.
  • How far apart will the heater and the fuel tank be? The closer is the better.
  • Consider protection below your vehicle (i.e., for flying stones). It is to prevent any damage.
  • You need to fuse the wiring to the 12V supply and the cable size enough. You also need to have all wiring protected and insulated.
  • Think of the position of the thermostat. Also, think of the control switch for the best functioning efficiency.
  • Consider the location to install the air intake on the heated air outlet. It is to maximize air circulation in your car or truck.
  • Consider whether you would choose many ducts, outlets, and zones; and how you will install them.
  • Think about the outlet and combustion exhaust fumes direction. Make the flow with window openings, vents, and neighbors.
  • Spare some time to develop a plan on how to maintain the exhaust dust-free when you are driving on dusty roads.

  • Does your vehicle have enough payload? Does it have the allowance to accommodate the weight of a full tank of a diesel heater?
  • Consider purchasing the diesel heater kit from an expert who has a previous track record. Buy a unit that has a warranty. Also, the one that comes with service agents within your reach.
  • A competent DIYer can install the kits. But I recommend you to have yours fitted by an expert. If you do not have the expertise and experience with electronics).
  • Found out the amount of Amps the unit will discharge from your batteries. Because there are various types of design in heaters

Factors to Consider During the Installation and Use of the Diesel Heater

After installing the diesel heater, you should switch it on frequently. Do it for a short duration. It will eject the air blocked in the fuel supply system completely.

Then fill up the fuel channel with fuel only.

You need a trial operation for the diesel heater. Before you subject it to normal functioning, do a trial.

During the trial operation, you need to check the entire system network. Do it for any leakage and safety issues.

Turn off the switch If you get a fuel smell. Turn it off if there is an irregular combustion noise or release of dense smoke too.

Disable the heater by removing the fuse. Also, it should only work into operation again after testing by an expert.

At the start of each heating season, perform a proper inspection. Do it for maintenance work.

You should check the following:

  1. Check both the air inlet and air outlet to confirm if there are any foreign objects or pollution.
  2. Clean the exterior of the diesel heater.
  3. Check-in case there exists any loose connection or corrosion of the electric contacts.
  4. Check to confirm any damage and clogging of the exhaust pipe and air inlet pipe.
  5. Check to spot any signs of leakage on the fuel pipe.

If the diesel parking heater stops working, you need to power it. Therefore, you would better power it once every month.

Then allow it to run for at least 10 minutes. Again, it is to avoid the malfunction of mechanical components.

The diesel heater’s air inlet and outlet vent need to be clean and accessible. So it is to offers a smooth channel for airflow to avoid overheating.

If you replace fuel with a low-temperature one, start the diesel heater for about 15 minutes. Then, do it to fill up the new fuel into the fuel pump and fuel pipe.

When filling the diesel heater with fuel, you have to switch it off first.

To realize this, adjust the control switch knob anti-clockwise. Then, position it to “0”.

The heat exchanger of the diesel heater system cannot work for over ten years.

You must replace it with a new one after ten years.

Let the heater producer or an agent perform the replacement work. You should also replace the overheating sensor with them.

You also need to replace the exhaust pipe of the diesel heater after it has worked for ten years.

Diesel heater accessories

If you do any electric welding work, turn off the diesel heater. Disconnect the positive wire power supply from the battery.

Join it to earth to guard the controller from any destruction.

You should store the diesel heater at an ambient heat range between -40 °C -85 °Celsius. Try to prevent doing any damage to the electronic components and elements.

Always make sure that only allowed customer service stations do the installation. Also, let them repair your diesel heater.

It’s advisable not to perform a repair by yourself. Also, if you are a non-manufacturer, don’t repair it yourself.

Chapter 11: FAQs on Diesel Heaters

I know you could be having many questions about diesel heaters.

Well, I will address most of these concerns here.

Let’s get straight to it.

Diesel air parking heater
Diesel air parking heater

Will the heater keep the interior of my vehicle warm even in sub-zero external temperatures?

Yes, the diesel heater has thermostatic control. So, you can set the desired interior temperature.

There is a limit to about -10 °C (14 °F).

Unfortunately, the heater might fail many times due to improper usage. So, the manufacturer can’t fix them remotely.

Does the diesel heater drain the battery of the vehicle?

The heater uses the vehicle’s petrol to heat. The battery rotates the fan motor, which consumes minor power.

When the heater is powered by a battery, when the battery voltage is lower than 8V (the voltage of the 24V heater is lower than 16V), the heater will stop working.

Can I use the diesel heater during the warmer months?

If the outside temperature is too high, when the heater reaches the set temperature, it will automatically stop working, and when it is lower than the set temperature, the heater will start working.

If it is summer, you can also use the ventilation function of the heater. The ventilation function means that when the heater is not heating, it provides fresh air in the vehicle compartment so that the air in the vehicle compartment will not be polluted.

Does the diesel heater produce uncomfortable noise?

Cheaper kits and poor setup can make the diesel heater produce uncomfortable noise.

For this reason, install the fuel pump with rubber mounts. Also, you can insulate it to avoid drumming by the chassis rail.

A better kit should include a fresh air intake fitted with a silencer. Yet, how you position these are crucial for noise avoidance.

Ordinary heater oil pumps will also produce a fixed frequency resonance.
Resonance is difficult to eliminate, you may need to choose a high-quality oil pump bracket.
However, the best option is that you can use the Vvkb silent fuel pump, which generates very little vibration and the pump’s beating noise is also very low.

As a DIY project, are there risks of causing a fire if I fix the diesel heater incorrectly?

A qualified DIYer who also got an excellent mastery of electrics can install a diesel parking heater well.

The main risk of heater fire is electrical problems. Make sure that the size of the heater’s main power supply wire is greater than 2.5 mm.
You also need to make sure that the heater’s air outlet is not less than 20 cm (7.8 inches) away from combustible materials.

Make sure you adhere to all installation guidelines. Pay keen attention to the muffler and exhaust pipe.

Fasten the exhaust pipe well away from appliances. It is like a hot water service and all plastics. Do not place the muffler outlet near open windows.

Can I uninstall my diesel heater and re-install in another vehicle?

Yes. Though for economic and technical justifications, this rarely makes sense. A diesel heater boosts the resale worth.

The removed parts are not always adequate. As a result, they are not able to install the same diesel heater into another vehicle.

You will need a complete installation kit or vehicle-specific components.

Let a technician check the possibility of a conversion.

In what way does a diesel parking heater enhance safety while driving?

The statistics say most accidents happen in the winter. It takes place within the initial 15 minutes of traveling.

These accidents happen due to reduced visibility. The vehicle’s extended reaction time due to the low temperatures.

Because of its warming abilities, a diesel heater provides safety. It also comforts during winter and on cold and wet days.

How long does it require for the heater to warm the engine and interior of a vehicle?

The duration depends on the size of the vehicle and the ambient air temperature.

A heating duration of between 20 to 30 minutes is usually adequate. It can turn uncomfortable negative temperatures into pleasant interior warmth.

Normally, the heating time of the diesel engine heater does not exceed 30 minutes.

What is the maximum duct length I can use?

The ducting needs to focus on the position of the diesel heater and the length of the motor vehicle.

There is no limitation on the length. Nonetheless, the more curves in the system, the less airflow and heat at the outlet.

You should choose a larger heater if the length of ducting is too excessive.

How long does the diesel heater take to shut down after turning it OFF?

The fan continues running for a specified duration to cool the heat exchanger.

The time taken will depend on the degree of return air temperature. This is how the diesel heater has been working.

Normally, it takes about 4 minutes to turn off the heater.

How do I select the right spot for the installation of the diesel heater?

The primary factor that influences the installation of the heater is the amount of space.

When selecting the location, you must factor in the excellent flow. It needs air around the diesel heater.

Which are some of the simple maintenance procedures I can perform on the diesel heater?

  • Switch the diesel heater at least once every four weeks for roughly 10 minutes, even when it is not cold.
  • The heater needs to undergo a trial run before the start of the heating period.
  • Switch off and remove the fuse of the diesel parking heater if:
    o Electronic components heat up
o The heater generates extraordinary persistent smoke
o The diesel heater produces unusual combustion noise
    o You smell fuel

Before using the heater again, make sure a professional checks it.

  • Clean the air supply system if necessary. Examine the exhaust and combustion of air supply system idling durations.

Must I mount the diesel heater on a flat surface?

Yes, you should mount the heater on a horizontal surface.

You can meet this when you mount it. The mounting bracket works the diesel heater kits.

What are the intervals of service?

We suggest you service the heater once every year, depending on the unit’s operation times.

Typically this needs to be around 2,500 hours for a standard use installation.

But, if you are mounting it on a ‘live aboard’ locomotive and the diesel parking heater will work more often. This figure will be about 3,000 hours.

We tell that you run the diesel heater for at least one hour every month. Run it even during the warmer months. That’s how you maintain the interior parts in perfect condition.

So, it is crucial for diesel air heaters since they have minimal use in the warmer periods.

But if you are fixing the diesel water heater type, then the system will gain from heat. The valves of the radiator open to send the coolant throughout the vehicle or marine vessel.
